Children attending the Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Lighthouse after-school program at Esperanza Charter Academy received a surprise Christmas present from their wish list on Thursday, December 19, 2013. The Lighthouse after- school program provides students with extra attention in academics and extra curricular activities during the school year.   Through the Christmas Wish List Project, 1,000 individuals and families served by Volunteers of America, including the children at Esperanza, were “adopted” by companies and individuals in the Greater New Orleans area.  Community members provided wrapped gifts for these special children to let them know others care.

About Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Since 1896, our ministry of service has supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men returning from prison, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart-and ultimately the spirit-of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
