More children than ever are participating in afterschool programs that keep them safe, inspire learning and help working families.  Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities.

On Thursday, October 23, Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Lighthouse Afterschool Program participated in this nationwide event to draw attention to the many ways our afterschool programs support students. At the schools they serve, The Lighthouse Program provides 300 hours of academic enrichment to each child’s school year.  To showcase the amazing work of The Lighthouse Program, Volunteers of America hosted interactive tours to highlight the activities of the program and its students at Robert R. Moton Charter School.

Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Since 1896, our ministry of service has supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men returning from prison, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart-and ultimately the spirit-of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
