On Tuesday, June 10, children from the Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Lighthouse Summer Program at Alice Harte visited Stoney Point Farm to harvest fresh fruits and vegetables and used them to make a delicious and healthy snack.  The partnership between Volunteers of America and Stoney Point Farm supports the “Farm to School” initiative to provide local, organically grown local produce for schools and summer camps that participate in the Volunteers of America Fresh Food Factor food service program.  Stoney Point Farm has also designated two acres of farmland to grow produce for the Fresh Food Factor program.

The Lighthouse Summer Program provides students with extra attention in both academic and extra-curricular activities during summer break.  While picking tomatoes and cucumbers fresh off the vine, the children were taught about the importance of local farming from the farm’s owner Tim Roper, a Marine veteran.

About Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Since 1896, our ministry of service has supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men returning from prison, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart-and ultimately the spirit-of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
