On August 21, we celebrate National Senior Citizen Day, a day to recognize contributions seniors make to our community.  The Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) helps recruit those 55 and older to give back their time, skills and talents to our community.  The Slidell Elk’s Line Dancers, comprised of Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ RSVP members, share their love of dancing with seniors in our nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

On Thursday, August 14, 2014, the Slidell Elk’s Line Dancers entertained residents of the Emeritus Senior Living Center in Mandeville.  Most residents tapped their toes and clapped along, but a few got up and danced. Some members of the Slidell Elk’s Line Dancers have been dancing for more than 20 years.  The members say they do it because they enjoy giving back to the community and seeing the happiness it brings to others, not to mention the benefits of staying active themselves.

About Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Since 1896, our ministry of service has supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men returning from prison, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart-and ultimately the spirit-of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
