Beginning in 2002, family members who lost loved ones in the September 11th attacks began to seek a forward-looking tribute to honor those lost and pay tribute to those who rose up in service.  This year the members of the St. Tammany Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans, honored firefighters and law enforcement officers in our community. Those serving in the Covington, Mandeville, Abita Springs, Lacombe and Slidell Fire Departments as well as the Covington Police Department, Mandeville Police Department, Slidell Police Department and St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Offices were included in the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance project.

Through the generous donation of almost 140 dozen cookies from local civic groups, businesses and individuals, 240 cookie bags and five cookie trays were put together by a group of RSVP Volunteers and delivered to St. Tammany Parish firefighters and law enforcement officers.  Albertson’s, Fresh Market, Mandeville Bakery, Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie, the Boys and Girls Club of Covington, Covington Food Bank, SALT, Volunteers of America North Shore staff and RSVP Volunteers donated cookies for this occasion.

“Volunteers of America recognizes that the men and women of the fire and law enforcement departments across our parish put themselves at great risk to serve their communities through public service.  This is but a small token of our appreciation for all that they do for our community,” said Dee Wild, RSVP Director.
