VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA GREATER NEW ORLEANS TO PARTICIPATE IN KATRINA ANNIVERSARY SERVICE PROJECT

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans is pleased to have been selected to participate in the City of New Orleans "Katrina 10 Citywide Day of Service" next month.
In the week leading up to the Aug. 29 anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall, a variety of events will take place throughout New Orleans, culminating in a day of service at multiple sites around the city. On Aug. 29, as many as 100 volunteers will converge on Elysian Courtyards, a 150-unit complex at 3000 Gentilly Blvd., which was opened after Katrina. The facility, owned by Volunteers of America partner Renaissance Neighborhood Development Corporation, provides affordable housing for working families. Volunteers will engage in landscaping and other beautification projects at the site, which is near Dillard University.

"More than 1,000 housing units owned by Volunteers of America were heavily damaged or destroyed on that sad day almost a decade ago," said CEO Jim LeBlanc. "We moved swiftly to restore housing and re-launch our most vital programs, and did our part to revamp, revive and revitalize our community. While our memories of Katrina are bleak, the celebration of our recovery is another vital step in full recovery from that nation's worst natural disaster.
"We're proud to participate in the Katrina 10 Citywide Day of Service and to continue our mission to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens," LeBlanc said.
