Beautiful Things Happen When You Look At Abilities Not Disabilities

Volunteers of America helps people with intellectual disabilities by focusing on their abilities. We believe in emphasizing what people can do rather than what they can’t.

Little Patrick Burden, at left, a resident of our Park Place Community Home, is an ideal example. A skilled artist, Burden has been painting for a long time, and people are beginning to notice his work. One of Burden’s paintings, shown at right, was chosen for the 2013 calendar published by STARC, a local organization that provides services and job training for persons with disabilities.

Burden is employed by STARC’s dry cleaning operation. Painting is only one of the hobbies he enjoys. He recently participated in Special Olympics and placed in two different events. He also loves to dance and socialize. Volunteers of America is proud to serve Burden, and we appreciate his beautiful art work.
