Stand Down: Another Way To Salute Veterans

In times of war, Stand Down described a safe retreat from combat, in which soldiers could rest and renew. Today, Stand Down refers to another kind of help for homeless veterans—a program that helps supply personal hygiene, clean clothing, medical and dental care, warm meals, and information on services.

With the help of our community partners, Volunteers of America supported those who bravely protected our country and now struggle with physical and mental wounds. On Oct. 25, Volunteers of America was part of the Southeast Louisiana Health Care System’s Stand Down initiative for homeless veterans in the area. Our Veterans Services Program educated participants about our services for homeless veterans. Thanks to sponsor Whitney Bank, our Fresh Food Factor program cooked 600 lunches for participants. Team Depot volunteers helped serve red beans and rice and jambalaya.
