Pioneer In Community Residential Living Services

Since 1974

Achieving independent living through community connections, education, training and self-directed service plans.

Community home residential living services are available for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Volunteers of America operates seven community homes in the metropolitan areas providing individuals with 24-hour support and supervision by Direct Support Professionals. Staff members ensure a comfortable, family-like environment and help residents achieve independent living through community connections, education, training and self-directed service plans. We believe that persons with developmental disabilities, unable to live independently in their own homes, function more productively and with greater self-esteem in small, residential settings, with intensive training in independent living skills, rather than in institutions.

For many of our residents, Volunteers of America will be home for life. For others, it will be a place where they gain life and self-care skills that will allow them to move on to supported independent living in their own apartments or with their families.

Volunteers of America has been active in promoting greater dignity and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities since 1974, when it opened New Orleans' first community home for adults.
