Cardiovascular Institute Hosts Christmas Party for Academy Place Seniors

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans and The Cardiovascular Institute of the South hosted a Christmas party on December 19, 2017, for the residents at Academy Place, Volunteers of America’s senior housing facility in Houma. The event was part of the agency’s Christmas Wish program, whereby the organization collects and distributes gifts to consumers in need who may not have otherwise received a Christmas gift this holiday season. The Cardiovascular Institute of the South sponsored Academy Place, providing all the gifts and hosting the holiday party.

Christmas Cheer Spreads to Local Residents in Supported Living Services

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans hosted a Christmas party for participants in its Supported Living Services Programs (SLS). The party was held at Lakeshore Playground on Thursday, December 14, 2017. The event was part of the agency’s Christmas Wish program, whereby the organization collects and distributes gifts to consumers in need who may not have otherwise received a Christmas gift this holiday season.

Northshore Consumers Celebrate Christmas Cheer

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans hosted a Christmas party for the Northshore participants in its Supported Living Services Programs (SLS). The party was held in Slidell on December 13, 2017. Academy Place for Seniors Opens in Houma

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans hosted a grand opening on November 15, 2017, for its newest affordable senior living community, Academy Place. Located at 311 Academy Street in Houma, the former historic Houma Elementary School property has been beautifully restored to create independent apartments for senior citizens. Academy Place offers seniors a gorgeous mix of historic and modern architecture in the form of 103 one- and two-bedroom apartments in three buildings designed to reflect the Art Deco era.

Funding Renewed for Veterans Services Programs

Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana announces renewed Federal funding for its Veterans Services programs that provide supportive services and transitional housing for homeless Veterans. The funding was received from the Department of Veterans Affairs for program renewal effective immediately. “We are thankful for the funding which allows us to continue to provide housing for homeless Veterans and ongoing supportive services to Veterans in need and their families,” says Voris Vigee, Executive Vice President of Programming for Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana.

New Board of Directors Welcomed

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans welcomes new board chairman, Geoffrey C. Artigues, along with new chair-elect Christy M. Howley Connois, and new board member Chuck Viator. “My desire to be on the board is driven by the fact that Volunteers of America truly helps so many disadvantaged individuals in our community. My experience with the Reach for the Stars Breakfast for the last five years has given me an opportunity to observe the truly exceptional work that occurs every day. I am excited to help spread the word and get many more people involved, and in turn, help more individuals,” said Chuck Viator.

Payne Diez Named Northshore Hero

Payne Diez, Manager of Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Repairs on Wheels Program, was honored as a “Northshore Hero” by the West St. Tammany YMCA at a luncheon on May 19, 2017. Northshore Heroes are everyday people committed to strengthening the community by performing extraordinary acts of courage and kindness. Through Volunteers of America’s Repairs on Wheels Program, Diez has helped hundreds of local seniors remain in their own homes by providing critical home repairs at no cost.

RSVP Volunteers Donate Summer Reading Books to Local Students

RSVP volunteers from Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) donated 138 summer reading books for the second grade students at Lyon Elementary School in Covington. The volunteers distributed the books to the students at Lyon Elementary School in Covington on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, just in time for summer vacation.

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans Receives Donation for Suicide Prevention in St. Tammany Parish

On Monday, April 24, Sgt. Trinity Graves, on behalf of the St. Tammany Deputy Sheriff’s Association, presented Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans with a donation of $1,850, which will help the organization provide lifesaving crisis response services across the Parish, including counseling to victims of attempted suicide, as well as to the families of those who have committed suicide
