    Volunteers of America Celebrates Grand Opening in Terrebonne Parish | Bayou Cane Apartments Add 82 Newly-Constructed Apartment Homes to Community

    New Orleans, LA (October 26, 2015) – The Bayou Cane Apartments located on Synergy Center Boulevard in Houma add 82 newly-constructed apartment homes to the community. The four-acre landscaped site features five, two- and three-story garden-style apartment buildings, a playground, community center, dog park, on-site parking and a nature trail. A ribbon-cutting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., and tours of the property will be offered following the ceremony. Bayou Cane Apartments is an affordable-living community where a portion of the apartment homes are reserved for working individuals and families earning up to 80 percent of area median income. Pre-leasing of these new one and two-bedroom apartment homes began in summer 2015, and approximately 85 percent of the units have been leased.

    St. Tammany Parish President Issues Proclamation Honoring Direct Support Professionals

    In honor of Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Week (Sept. 13-19), St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister showed her support by presenting Volunteers of America with a proclamation on Tuesday, September 8 honoring the work of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). DSPs – also referred to as caregivers, personal assistants and direct care or homecare aides –provide daily support services for many Americans.

    Terraces on Tulane Celebrates National Senior Citizens Day

    On August 21, the senior residents of Terraces on Tulane commemorated National Senior Citizens Day, which celebrates and recognizes the outstanding achievements of senior citizens. Located in Mid-City New Orleans, Terraces on Tulane is a Volunteers of America property that provides one-bedroom apartments for seniors ages 62 and older.

    The Association of Legal Administrators Hosts Backpack Drive for Local Students in Partnership with Volunteers of America’s Lighthouse Program

    On August 25, volunteers from the Association of Legal Administrators distributed their first batch of backpacks and school supplies to more than 50 local children through Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Lighthouse Program, which provides instruction and enrichment activities for youth outside of the regular school day. The Association of Legal Administrators raised nearly $5,000 to purchase supplies for the students.

    Bayou Cane Apartment Homes Now Accepting Families at Houma Complex

    Volunteers of America and Renaissance Neighborhood Development Corporation have opened a new apartment community on Synergy Center Boulevard in Terrebonne Parish. Bayou Cane Apartment Homes, which feature amenities developed around the natural environment, has 82 one- and two-bedroom garden-style apartment homes. Approximately half of the units have already been leased, and the organization is eager to complete leasing.

    Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans Receives $125,000 Grant From The Home Depot Foundation to Help Veterans

    The Home Depot® Foundation pledged a $125,000 grant to Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans to address the critical housing needs of U.S. military veterans. This grant is part of $1.6 million in grants announced for 10 Volunteers of America homeless veterans programs in seven states that will be used to refurbish or build 354 housing units for vulnerable veterans.

    St. Tammany Parish Deputy Sheriff's Association, Reserves to hold golf tournament benefiting suicide awareness On July 25, the St. Tammany Parish Deputies' Association, in conjunction with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Reserve Division, will host a golf tournament to help bring awareness to the increasing number of suicides that occur in St. Tammany Parish each year.

    Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for James A. Schmidt Boardwalk and Trail Saturday May 30, 2015 at Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge

    The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges will host the dedication of the recently completed recreational trail and boardwalk in honor of James (Jim) A. Schmit. Jim has worked tirelessly as volunteer in support of the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges Complex. The funding for the materials used to complete this project was made possible by a Louisiana Recreational Trails Program grant through the Federal Highway Administration that Jim wrote and helped to facilitate. Jim has wholeheartedly supported, leveraged, and mentored a dedicated volunteer force that was instrumental in the completion of this project.
